Coach Restoration work pictures 2021

In July 2021 the Altrincham Electric Railway Preservation Society's coach No 117 emerged from the paint shop at the Midland Railway Trust at Butterley for the first time after many years of external restoration work. This centre trailer car dates from the 1931 pioneering 1500Volt DC electrified Manchester South Junction & Altrincham Railway stock - withdrawn in 1971. The AERPS have two of these vehicles the other being Car 121. The next stage with 117 is to seek sponsors for restoration of the internal compartments and so edge the vehicle back into private railway service. This short film shows the movement of Car 117 from Butterley to the Museum at Swanwick and also includes the contra movement of the historic 1866 built Midland Railway Kirtley locomotive No 158A to Butterley.  Meanwhile the the society is starting the marathon task of restoring their other vehicle - Car 121.

CAR 121 in 2021

The Altrincham Electric Railway Preservation Society, formed in 1971 own Cars 117 & 121 from the former Manchester South Junction & Altrincham Railway electrification scheme of 1931. The external bodywork of No 117 has been restored complete with original MSJ & AR crests. The interior of this carriage awaits completion. With this milestone achieved this small voluntary society is now turning its attention to its other vehicle - Car 121. There is a lot of work to be done but the aim for now is to bring No 121's exterior up to the same secure condition as No 117. It's a new challenge...
